Detachment as active force is the residual capacity to move within the forces of the age without being taken by them. Passive detachment is mere distance. Active detachment is the interior distance that permits the man to use the energies of the age while remaining oriented by the permanent measure. The distinction is decisive for the residual path.
The age supplies continuous stimulation, continuous pressure, continuous invitation to identification. The man who identifies is already dissolving. The man who remains detached while still acting preserves a residual freedom. That freedom is not the modern freedom of preference. It is the freedom of the type that does not allow the horizontal currents to rewrite its center.
Young men often mistake detachment for indifference or for quietism. The residual detachment is neither. It is the condition of clear action under residual conditions. Without it the man is simply moved by the age. With it he can still choose the direction of his force. The choice is the residual expression of the higher will.
Practice detachment as an active capacity. Do not confuse it with the refusal to act. The man who remains detached while still moving is already living the residual form of the differentiated individual under the pressures of the late cycle.
