Continuity of the higher type is the residual task that remains after every traditional continuity has been interrupted. The forms, the institutions, the collective supports of the higher life have largely disappeared. What remains is the possibility that a man may still form himself according to the permanent measure and thereby continue the type itself. That continuation is the residual form of the higher order.
The continuity is not biological, not institutional, and not political in the ordinary sense. It is the continuity of a vertical orientation carried by successive individuals who refuse to allow the age to rewrite the measure. Each such individual is a residual link. The links do not restore the lost chain. They preserve the possibility that the higher type does not vanish completely from the residual age.
Young men who sense the break with the past often conclude that continuity of any higher kind is no longer possible. The residual path rejects that conclusion. Continuity remains possible in the residual form of the man who still orients himself by the permanent measure. The possibility is narrow. It is still the only form of higher continuity that the residual age permits.
Continue the higher type under residual conditions. Do not wait for collective structures that the cycle has already exhausted. The man who keeps the permanent measure present is already living the deeper continuity that the entire sequence has been clarifying.
