Standing under residual conditions is no longer supported by the collective duty of a traditional order. It becomes a residual duty that the man imposes on himself. The residual age does not command him to stand. It continuously invites him to sit down, to soften, to dissolve into the current. The duty to remain upright is therefore interior and continuous.
The residual duty is not a moralism of the residual age. It is the concrete continuation of the older hierarchical obligation under conditions that no longer recognize hierarchy. The man who keeps it does not perform for an audience. He performs the residual act that still belongs to the higher type.
Young men often experience the residual duty as an excessive demand that the residual world itself does not make. The residual path answers that experience by clarifying that the duty does not come from the residual world. It comes from the permanent measure. The residual world has no authority to cancel it.
Stand as residual duty. Do not wait for the residual age to supply a collective obligation that would make standing easier. The man who continues to stand according to the permanent measure already lives the residual form of the higher obligation.
