Young men who still sense the permanent criterion often seek residual collectives that will share the burden of carrying it. Most of those collectives have already lowered the criterion until it becomes compatible with the age. The residual path rejects that lowering. It continues to apply the full measure without waiting for collective support.
This solitary application is the residual form of the older hierarchical and initiatory work. The man who keeps the criterion present already performs the residual duty. That duty does not become less binding because it is no longer shared.
Live by the permanent criterion alone. Do not wait for the age to restore the collective carriers that the cycle has already dissolved. The residual act is to keep the measure effective in a world that has no place for it. That effectiveness is the continuity of the higher type.
