Quality as residual law is the capacity to let the higher standard govern action after every institution of quality has lost its authority. Schools, crafts, armies, and rites once enforced difference. They now administer numbers. The law of quality has no office left. It survives only where a man still obeys it as if it had an office.
Young men who love quality often try to find a residual institution that will keep the law for them. They want a guild, a scene, or a standard issued from outside. Those issuances, when they appear, are usually already compromised. The residual path makes quality a personal law and then tests every concrete choice against it. The test is severe because no one else is watching in the old way.
This solitary law is the residual form of the older traditional knowledge of rank. Rank once stood on quality of being. Rank now stands, if it stands at all, on the same ground inside one man. The man who lets quality decide already performs the residual act.
Obey quality as law. Do not wait for an institution to make the obedience easy. The residual act is to prefer the tighter form in work, body, speech, and company even when the looser form is rewarded. That preference is the last legislation of the higher world.
