Beyond instruction lies the point at which a man no longer needs to be told what the measure is, because he has begun to live from it. Instruction orients the one who can still hear. It cannot walk for him. A late age produces men who remain students forever, circling the same truths as a substitute for obedience.
Young men linger in instruction because instruction feels like motion. New terms, new books, new refinements give the sensation of ascent. Ascent is simpler and harder. It is the same law applied again tomorrow. When the teaching has been received with enough clarity, further delay is a form of fear.
This exit from the classroom of ideas is the residual form of the older traditional knowledge of the end of novitiate. Novitiate had a term. The residual path must supply its own term. The man who stops collecting orientation and starts being oriented already performs the residual act.
Step beyond instruction. Keep the texts as weapons and maps, and refuse to live inside them. The residual act is to let the teaching become silent because it has become the way you stand. Silence of that kind is completion, not emptiness.
