Earlier phases required the defense or the extension of traditional forms. This phase requires the capacity to live the residual possibility when the forms themselves have withdrawn.
The demand is not abstract. It appears in every concrete domain already treated: body, work, speech, desire, time, attention. In each domain the cycle removes the external pressure that once favored quality. The man must supply the pressure himself. Where the environment once selected for the higher type, the residual man must now select for it in himself. That selection is the concrete answer to the cycle's demand.
Young men who sense the weight of the age often interpret it as a call to collective action or to public resistance. Those interpretations belong to earlier phases of the cycle or to the residual desire for a supporting order. The present demand is quieter and more exacting. It is the daily maintenance of the type under conditions that reward the opposite.
Meet the demand where it actually falls. Keep the residual axis, the interior form, and the applications without requiring the cycle to change its character. The man who does so has already answered the requirement of the age in the only manner that remains effective.
