The higher type under residual conditions must learn to live without external confirmation of his orientation. In a traditional order the man of quality found his measure reflected in the structures that surrounded him. Rank, function, and sacred authority supplied continuous verification. Those structures have largely withdrawn. The verification must now be interior.
The absence of confirmation is not a temporary inconvenience. It is the normal condition of the residual age. The man who still waits for the age to acknowledge the permanent measure has already abandoned the residual path. Confirmation from the residual world would only mean that the measure had been lowered to the level of that world.
Young men feel the lack of recognition as a continuous temptation to adjust the standard until some form of collective approval becomes available. The residual path rejects that adjustment. The man keeps the measure even when every surrounding voice treats it as irrelevant or hostile. The strength required is the residual form of the older hierarchical firmness.
Live without external confirmation. Do not interpret the silence of the residual world as evidence that the measure itself has failed. The measure stands. The man who continues to stand by it already occupies the residual position that the cycle still leaves open.
