Clarity under residual conditions is the capacity to see the forces of the age without allowing those forces to cloud the interior measure. The residual field is dense with competing claims, slogans, and false centers. The differentiated man does not deny their presence. He refuses to let them rewrite the criterion by which he judges what is higher and what is lower.
Clarity is not a mood and not a technique of positive thinking. It is the residual form of the older contemplative and warrior virtues that once kept the higher type oriented. Under residual conditions the same virtues must operate without the support of a traditional environment. The man who keeps them present already exercises residual power.
Young men are trained by the age to treat clarity as a form of coldness or detachment that isolates them from others. The residual path rejects that framing. Clarity isolates only from the leveling current. It does not isolate the man from the permanent measure. The two remain joined.
Maintain clarity in the residual field. Do not allow the density of the age to become an excuse for lowered standards. The man who continues to see according to the permanent measure already occupies the residual position that the entire sequence has been preparing.
