The residual type is the higher man who continues to form himself according to the permanent measure after the traditional order that once produced and protected that type has withdrawn. He does not restore the lost order. He continues the type itself under residual conditions. That continuation is the only form of higher continuity the residual age still permits.
The residual type is not defined by political affiliation, by membership in any contemporary movement, or by the display of symbols that once belonged to traditional civilizations. He is defined by the interior hierarchy he maintains and by the measure he refuses to abandon. External signs can be imitated. The residual type cannot.
Young men who sense the disappearance of higher forms often look for a collective identity that will supply the missing type. The residual path rejects that search as primary. Collective identities of the residual age almost always operate under the same leveling forces they claim to resist. The residual type is formed in solitude first. Only then does any association become possible without surrender.
Become the residual type. Do not wait for a restored world in which the higher type would again be publicly recognized. The man who keeps the permanent measure present already lives the residual form of the higher order. That living is the task the cycle still leaves open.
