Action must now be performed without any collective horizon that once gave it meaning. The residual man continues to act according to the permanent measure even though the age offers no shared purpose and no shared recognition. The quality of the action remains rooted in the vertical criterion, not in the results the age is capable of valuing.
Young men who still seek meaningful action often look for residual causes or residual communities that will supply a horizon for their effort. Most of those causes have already been adjusted to the horizontal requirements of the age. The residual path does not wait for such horizons. It continues to act from the interior standard that remains available.
This horizonless action is the residual form of the older traditional action that once served a living order. The man who keeps acting according to the permanent measure already performs the residual duty. That duty does not become less real because it is no longer shared.
Act without collective horizon. Do not wait for the age to restore conditions in which higher action is publicly meaningful. The residual act is to keep the permanent measure present in every concrete decision. That presence is the continuity of the higher type under residual conditions.
