The interval as living terrain is the capacity of the differentiated man to treat the space between worlds as the ground of action. The old order has already withdrawn. The next form has not arrived. Most men experience this gap as emptiness or as license. The higher type experiences it as the field in which his measure is tested without shelter.
Young men who sense that the age is an interval often look for a residual world that will close the gap for them. They search for restored institutions, restored rites, restored ranks that would make the interval feel temporary and safe. Those restorations do not exist in usable form. The residual path accepts the interval as the given ground and keeps the vertical measure decisive on that ground.
This solitary use of the interval is the residual form of the older traditional knowledge of the threshold. The man who treats the gap as terrain already performs the residual act. He does not postpone form until a new world appears. He holds form now, where the world offers none.
Treat the interval as terrain. Do not wait for the age to become a world again before you take your stance. The residual act is to keep every concrete relation under the higher measure while the gap remains open. That act is the only continuity available in a late cycle.
