The horizontal world lives by fever. It calls the fever authenticity, urgency, or passion. The differentiated man recognizes it as capture. His center remains cool enough to see and to decide.
Young men who first hear of this coldness often fear it as deadness. The age has taught them that heat is life. Heat of that kind is only agitation. True coldness leaves the man more awake, not less. It is the temperature of command. A man who cannot cool his center will be used by whatever current is hottest that week.
This solitary coldness is the residual form of the older traditional knowledge of solar and polar detachment. The higher type was never the most inflamed man in the room. He was the man who could stand in fire without becoming fire. The man who keeps that temperature already performs the residual act.
Cool the center. Do not confuse intensity with height. The residual act is to meet heat without joining it, and to keep judgment free of the fever that surrounds it. That coldness is a masculine virtue under residual conditions.
