The warrior without an army is the capacity to keep the warrior qualities after every traditional military and caste order has been dissolved. Courage, obedience to a higher measure, indifference to comfort, and readiness for risk once had a public home. That home is gone. The qualities remain possible as a personal law. The man either carries them or he does not.
Young men who feel the warrior pull often look for residual armies: groups, aesthetics, and conflicts that will give the qualities a costume. Costume is easy. Qualities are not. An army of the age will usually spend his force on horizontal fights and leave him emptier than it found him. The residual path forms the warrior first as a type, then lets action follow from the type.
This solitary warriorhood is the residual form of the older traditional knowledge of the Kshatriya. Rank was once given by birth and rite. Rank is now proven by conduct under pressure. The man who keeps warrior form in an unwarrior world already performs the residual act.
Become the warrior without waiting for an army. Do not waste the type on theatrical combat. The residual act is to keep courage, discipline, and cold readiness present in ordinary conditions. That presence is the warrior under residual law.
