Refusal of the horizontal measure is the capacity to reject success, comfort, and opinion as the standards by which a life is judged. The age has one measure and it applies that measure everywhere: more, easier, more seen. Under that measure the higher type looks like a failure or an eccentricity. The differentiated man accepts the appearance and keeps the older standard.
Young men who first refuse the horizontal measure often replace it with another horizontal measure: a different crowd, a different scoreboard, a different appetite dressed as revolt. That is only a change of market. True refusal is quieter. It asks whether an act increases form or dissolves it. That question will isolate a man. Isolation of that kind is the price of a vertical standard.
This solitary refusal is the residual form of the older traditional knowledge of quality. Quality was once guarded by caste, rite, and law. It is now guarded only by the man who will still use it as a criterion. The man who judges by height rather than by number already performs the residual act.
Refuse the horizontal measure. Do not let the age tell you what counts. The residual act is to weigh work, desire, friendship, and time by the increase or loss of form. That weighing is the last public function of the higher criterion, even when it remains unseen.
